SOLDIER DEAD.

J. M. McNay, editor of the Galena Republican, died at his home in Columbus on Sunday morning. Mr. McNay was ill only a few days, his ailment being heart and stomach trouble.

Deceased was one of the good citizens of the county and will be sadly missed. Mr. McNay came to this country several years ago from Phillips county, Kansas, and engaged in the newspaper business at Columbus, the Advocate being the paper he run. He made a success of the business and retired from active work for a time, selling out to the present proprietor W. A. Mitchell. But the old germ of newspaper work got busy and Mr. McNay again engaged in the business, this time in Galena, in company with his son, Arthur, and he was the active editor of the paper up to the time of his death.

Mr. McNay was a member of the directory of the Inter-State Reunion Association, and his counsel was always good. He was secretary of the association, and during the week of reunion was adjutant.

Mr. McNay was one of the youngest old soldiers in this country. He was a member of Co. B, 45th Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil war, joining when a mere boy. He was born July 20, 1848, and had he lived until next July would have been 60 years of age.

Funeral services were held at the home in Columbus on Tuesday afternoon of this week.

Mr. McNay is survived by his wife and two sons, on of whom , Arthur, was engaged in the newspaper business with him at Galena, and the other, Claude, is district clerk of this county.
