He Was Nearly 92 Years Old and an

Allen County Pioneer.

  Judge James M. Wallace, a Civil War veteran and pioneer in Allen county, where he had lived fifty three years, died at his home in Humboldt yesterday.  He was the father of Mrs. Mary C. Seible and the grandfather of Frank Myers, J. R. Myers and Mrs. Carrie Roberts of this city.  Mrs. Seible was with her father when he died, having spent much of her time in Humboldt recently because of his illness.  Frank Myers, Mrs. Pearl Myers and Mrs. Maggie King went to Humboldt this morning to attend the funeral, which was held this afternoon.

  Judge Wallace would have been 92 years old next month.  He was born January 17, 1829, in Springfield, Ill.  As a youth he learned carpentering, being apprenticed when he was 16 years of age for a term of four years, during two of which he worked for his board and clothing and two months of schooling each year.

  He enlisted in the Union army August 2, 1862, as a member of Company C, 116th Illinois Volunteers, and was elected lieutenant of the company.  It was detailed for service in Mississippi and in the march from Memphis, Tenn., Judge Wallace was taken ill and failed to regain his health.  He was invalided home where he was given detached duty, enforcing the draft, arresting deserters and the like, until he was mustered out in 1865.

  He came to Kansas in 1867 and bought a farm five miles west of Humboldt, where he lived until 1896, when he moved to Humboldt, where he had since resided.  He had served Humboldt both as mayor and probate judge.

  October 19, 1849, he married Mary Garver.  They were the parents of eight children.
