Biographical Sketch

  James Haney was born in West Moreland county, Penn., October 25, 1840, and died at Fairbury, Nebraska, January 14, 1925.  He was the forth son of a family of seven children all of whom died before he did.

  In June 1856, the subject of our biographical sketch moved with his parents to Van Buren county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.

  When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in Company H, 3rd Iowa Cavalry volunteers.  On December 4, 1864, he was taken prisoner of war at White Station, Tenn. and was confined in Andersonville and other prisons until the close of the war.  At the end of the war, he returned home and resumed his duties of stock raising and farming.

  On February 9, 1881 he was united in marriage to Susan Mary Blair, of Latrobe, Iowa.  They had five children resulting from this union:  Mrs. Ollie J. Mendenhall of Fairbury, Nebr.; Mrs. Elizabeth Agnes Luther, of Denver, Colo.; John M. Haney, who passed away August 18, 1916; Mrs. Luela Ethel Lacy of Des Moines, Iowa and James R. Haney of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

  In 1892, the family moved to Goodland and in May 1897 Susan Blair Haney died.  Mr. Haney never remarried.

  In 1916, Mr. Haney was stricken with blindness and up until the time of his death made his home with his children at different places.

  Mr. Haney’s remains were brought to Goodland, Kansas and he was buried in the Goodland Cemetery on January 18th, 1925.
