Geo. W. Burkett.
The death of G. W. Burkett
occurred at his home near the cemetery on Saturday, April 21, aged eighty-two
years. His death follows that of his aged companion in life by a little
more than three weeks and his children now mourn the death of both parents.
George Washington Burkett was born
in Woodbary, Cannon county Tennessee on October 4, 1834. His marriage to
Lucinda N. Derryberry occurred on September 29, 1859, their wedded life covering
a period of more than fifty-seven years. He came to this community in
March 1870, where he lived a respected and industrious life. He was
converted in early life and joined the Methodist church.
Of a family of ten children,
six survive: Mrs. J. W. Skinner of Sunnyside, Wash.; James of Zeigler,
Ill., and Mrs. Peter Gabler, Mrs. Ed. Wells, Walter and Oral Burkett all of this
place.
Mr. Burkett was a veteran of the
Confederate army in the Civil war, and at his funeral several of the pallbearers
were members of the G. A. R. Funeral services were held at his home on
Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, Rev. Quilliam of the Baptist church
officiating.
