Death of Elias Summers

  Elias Summers, age 80 years died Saturday, April 27th, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. T. Miller, north of Altoona.  Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the daughter’s home conducted by F. W. Rettmann.  Burial was in the Altoona cemetery.  Deceased was born near Frederick City, Maryland, January 31st, 1838.  He was married to Mary Ann Shaul, at Anderson, Indiana, September 28th, 1865.  To this union four children were born two sons and two daughters, the sons dying in early childhood.  The two daughters survive.  They are Mrs. R. T. Miller and Mrs. W. A. Hughes, both residing here.  Deceased located in Wilson county in 1869 and lived on his farm, four miles north of Altoona.  He served three years in the Civil War, being a member of Company I, 75th Indiana volunteers.  His other relatives in this section are two nephews, Dr. M. L. Summers, of Altoona, and Dr. I. C. Summers, of Chanute.  Deceased became affiliated with the Congregational church at an early age and always lived a straight, forward Christian life.  He was always a very active and enterprising man, possessing a cheerful disposition and always having a kind word for everyone.  A few weeks ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never rallied.  This grand old pioneer will be missed by his large concourse of friends.  He was a good citizen in every way and his passing is mourned by all who knew him.
