Charles Sherman Dead.

Charles Sherman, among the few remaining old-time residents of Paola, died Monday, May 18 at his home on west Wea street, where for twenty years he resided and was engaged in the tailoring business. He was taken to his bed on Wednesday of last week and the announcement of his death was much of a surprise, as few of his friends knew he was seriously ill. His death was the result of liver and kidney trouble. He was aware he could not recover and made necessary business arrangements. He retained consciousness to the last.

Mr. Sherman was born in Germany September 28, 1833. He learned the tailoring trade there and came to this country when a young man locating at Kansas City. He was a veteran of the civil war, a member of company D, 5th Iowa cavalry, serving three years and eleven months. In 1868 he came to Paola and for several years was engaged with Mr. Klassan at merchant tailoring. He took but little recreation, and year by year toiled his life away. He was married in Paola at an early day to his surviving wife, whose maiden name was Henrietta N. West. For many years he was a member of I. O. O. F. lodge No. 11 of Paola and was formerly a member of McCaslin Post, G. A. R., for ten years being the quartermaster of the post.

With his wife he is survived by eleven children, Carl S. Sherman of Paola, Mrs. J. B. Lane of Valley-twp., Gus Sherman of Chanute, Mrs. J. E. Prather of Kingfisher, Okla., John F. Sherman, who holds a position at the Osawatomie State hospital, Mrs. Burr Connor of Paola, Mrs. Albert Miller and Mrs. George Miller of Chanute, Mrs. J. D. Taylor and William and Charles Sherman of Paola. The funeral services, in charge of the Odd Fellows, were held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial took place in the Paola cemetery.
