CIVIL WAR VETERAN

DIED YESTERDAY NOON.

  Charles P. Johnston, 74 years old, passed away yesterday afternoon at his home 1904 Wellington Place, after two and a half years’ illness.  He was born in Virginia November 22, 1844.  In 1862 he joined the Confederate army as a member of Company B, Eleventh Regiment of the Confederate Cavalry.  He served in twenty-four battles with General Lee, among them the greatest fought during the Civil War.

  Forty years ago he came to Kansas and settled in Reno County.  He resided there until about twenty years ago, when he came to Wichita and became interested in live stock business at the stock yards, and remained in active business there until two and a half years ago, when he was taken ill, which finally caused his death.

  Mr. Johnston was one of the few remaining Confederate veterans in this city, the organization not being composed of many men now.  During the time of his business interests at the stock yards he endeared himself to everyone who became acquainted with him, and his stories of the war were much in demand.

  He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. M. W. Dorsey of this city.  The funeral services will be held from the Cavalry Presbyterian Church at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.  Rev. J. S. Stapleton will be in charge of the services.  Interment will be made in Maple Grove Cemetery.  The Mueller Untertaking Company is in charge of the arrangements.
