Obituary.

Benjamin Newton Davis was born February 23, 1838, in Berkely county, Virginia, and died at his home, five and one half miles southeast of Humboldt, Kansas, December 26, 1917, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 4 days. For the past nine years he had been an invalid.

Mr. Davis was married February 18, 1867, to Martha S. Baxley. To this union were born twelve children, two dying in infancy. Betty, Jack and William also preceded their father. Seven survive; they are George E, of Strathmore, Calif., Mrs. Nannie Fronk, Elmer, Mrs. Minnie Stauffer and Calvin, of Humboldt, Bert of Sedan, and J. Ray of Collinsville, Oklahoma.

From 1862 to 1865 Mr. Davis served in the Southern army on the staff of General Jackson. He came to Kansas in 1881, settling near Humboldt, where he has since lived.

He was a member of the Baptist church, but after coming to Kansas became affiliated with the Evangelical church, remaining a faithful Christian throughout his life. He was a kind husband and loving father, and is survived by his faithful wife, five sons and two daughters, seventeen grandchildren and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted by his old minister, Rev. J. S. Miller, of Hutchinson, at the home at 10:30 o’clock Friday morning and interment was in Mount Hope cemetery.
