AUSTIN REED’S DEATH.

The death of Austin Reid removes from Coffey county one of the best known men in this vicinity. Mr. Reid was a man of high character and had a large circle of friends, who mourn his death. He is survived by one of the most highly esteemed families in the county who have the sincere sympathy of their friends and neighbors. He was a good man in every way.

Austin Reid was born in Meigs county, Ohio, May 21, 1845, and died in Burlington, Kans., November 14, 1908; aged 63 years, 5 months and 23 days. At the age of nineteen he enlisted in the Civil war October 8, 1861. On July 24, 1867 he was united in marriage with Rebecca Hawley; to this union were born eight children, all of whom are living. They are; Mrs. John Shobe, Strawn; E. M. Reid, Yates Center; Mrs. Geo. Alexander, Burlington; Myron A. of Burlington; Mrs. Velascoe Sanders, of Burlington; Guy C., Burlington; and Misses Bertha and Mabel who are still at home. In 1879, he with his wife and four children removed to Kansas and settled on a farm in this county, ten miles north-east of Burlington, where he made his home until September of this year, when on account of failing health he moved to this city. Thirty five years ago he was converted and united with the Christian church of which he was a member until his death. He was a member of company C, 63 Ohio Vol., Inft. was with Buels army in reinforcing Grant at Shilo, where he was seriously wounded. He was in the battle of Chicakamauga where he was again wounded. Later served with the army of Tennessee, in the Atlantic campaign and made the famous march with Sherman to the sea, and was discharged at the close of the war.
