Obituary of A. J. Vickers..

A. J. Vickers was born in Harrisburg, Pa., March 24, 1835, and died at his late home in Oklahoma City, Okla., Tuesday, Sept. 8th, 1915, at about 6 p. m., being 80 years, 5 months and 14 days old.

He moved to Girard, Crawford county, Kansas, while yet a young man. He established the first store in Girard, being located on the south-west corner of the square. He was united in marriage in Girard to Miss Margaret McIntosh in 1868, being the first couple married in Girard. Their first born, William, was the first child born in Girard. To this union five children were born, viz: William, Ellida, Bess, Luna, and Virginia.

Mr. Vickers was a patriotic, public spirited citizen, holding a number of important positions, among them being the first representative to the legislature from Crawford county, a position as United States land commissioner at Hays City, Kansas, under President Grant. And he served his country during the civil war. Always having at heart the best interest of the country in which he lived.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mrs. Margaret Vickers, one son Mr. William A. Vickers, of Roswell, N. M.; three daughters, Mrs. Robert M. Scott, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. F. D. Courtney, St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. J. M. Liepman, of Pittsburg, Kansas, a number of other relatives, and a large company of friends, limited only by his acquaintances.
