VOL. 29, No. 26
A. B. Charpie, another of the old settlers of this community, passed
away in death at his home in the northern suburbs of the city, Tuesday evening,
December 5, 1916, aged nearly 73 years. Funeral services were held at the
family residence on Thursday the 7th at 2:00 o’clock p. m., conducted by Rev.
Father Upson of the Christ church (Episcopal), interment at Walnut Hill.
Deceased was one of the well known citizens of this community, having resided
here some thirty years, for the greater portion of the time being engaged in his
profession, that of gunsmith and expert mechanic, until failing eyesight
compelled him to retire from the duties of his profession. Deceased was a
man well posted in the affairs of the county and state and for a considerable
portion of his time in this community took an active part in municipal affairs.
He was for a number of years a member of the Board of Education and on moral
questions was on the right side; and in his humble and unpretending manner
discharged the duties of a good citizen.
Alvin Benton Charpie, son of Pierre Fredrick and Elizabeth (Baughman) Charpie,
was born January 22, 1844, at Mt. Vernon, Ohio; his father being a native of
Switzerland and his mother a native of Germany.
When 16 years of age the subject of this sketch enlisted in the Union army in
the Civil War, as a member of Company G, 51st Indiana Infantry, as cornetist in
the regimental band and served until the end of the war.
In the year 1883 he was joined in marriage with Miss Sarah Ann Maybelle, in
Montana, coming from there to Kingman in the year 1887, where they have since
made their home.
Of this union there now remains two sons and three daughters, they being Samuel
Charpie of Ecanaba, Mich.; Alvin Charpie, jr., of this county; Miss Maybelle
Charpie of this county; Mrs. Leyton Perry of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Frank
Daniels of Sylvia, Kansas. Other relatives of the deceased in this
community are his sisters, Mrs. R. C. Richardson and Mrs. Albertson of this
city.
The Leader-Courier extends words of condolence to the bereaved wife and children
and other relatives of the deceased.
