LYON COUNTY, KANSAS
GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was formed at the close of the Civil War by Union Soldiers. There were many posts through out the United States. This organization was the fore runner of the present day American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. If your ancestor belonged to this group, then he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and there should be Military, and maybe Pension records that you can get from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. There is a link on this page to obtain the forms needed for these records. You will have to send two forms if you want both Military and Pension records. (One form for each request.) Make sure that you write at the top of the form "SEND ALL RECORDS", as they often send only part of the records, unless you request them all.
