Greenwood Cemetery


GREENWOOD - UPPER DRY CREEK - CEMETERY



On February 28, 1871, Elizabeth MORGAN donated to the trustees of Dry Creek Cemetery and to their successors in office, the ground which is occupied by the Greenwood, or Upper Dry Creek Cemetery. It is located about three and one half miles southwest of Emporia, Kansas. (N.E. Quarter, Section 32, Township 19, Range 11)

According to tombstone inscriptions, the earliest burials in Greenwood Cemetery were those of children of John R. and Elizabeth GRIFFITH : Caroline who died January 2, 1860; Elizabeth A. who died January 19, 1860; John who died January 21, 1860; and Mary who died February 8, 1860. They were buried before the formal deeding of the cemetery ground.

The cemetery continues in use, and is in good condition.

NOTE: This Cemetery is one of the early Welsh cemeteries in Lyon County. Evergreen Cemetery about 1 mile east is another Welsh Cemetery.
