OSWEGO INDEPENDENT, 10 March 1899
Obituary of LEWIS PONTICE HOWARD
DIED--In Oswego, Kansas, Tuesday March 7, 1899, at 9:15 p. m. Lewis Pontice Howard, aged 56 years. 
Mr. Howard was sick about 10 days and death resulted form kidney and stomach trouble. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge of Norcatur, Kansas, also the G.A.R. post of that city, having enlisted as a private of Co. F. Cal. Vols., on Lincoln's last call for troops. 
The funeral services were conducted by the G.A.R. Post of Oswego, Wednesday morning from the family residence, and his remains were interred in the Oswego cemetery. Arthur Creasy, of the Baptist church, officiating at the services at the house. Deceased had been a resident of this city for two years, coming here from Southwest Missouri. He leaves a wife to mourn his loss, and a daughter Mrs. Mary Bender, of Bartlesville, I. T. and three minor children, Roy, Ella and Charles.
