Simeon W Peeples, farmer, purchased the land, and on June 10, 1873, donated it to the Methodist Episcopal Church. Money was raised and a church built, with the cemetery as it's front yard. The church remained for over 50 years and was eventually torn down, and the cemetery was maintained by the descendents. In 1963, Victor Regnier purchased this land for the development of Ranchmart shopping center. The ancestors fought for the preservation of the cemetery and a portion of it was saved, while the area where the Post Office was built was sacrificed. The Leawood Garden Club donated their time to maintain the cemetery until the 1980s, and a few years later the Leawood Lions took over the maintenance. Victor Regnier and his wife are entombed at the cemetery, and ownership remains with his descendents. Transcriber's Note: This is a complete transcription by reading and photographing the gravestones. Photos available upon request. About the Cemetery: This old cemetery is located just east of the intersection of 95th Street and Mission Road between Ranch Mart shopping center and the U.S. Post Office. The cemetery is enclosed by an iron fence and because the shopping area has been graded all around it, stands higher than street level. It is nicely maintained, and a very familiar landmark. It is something of a curiosity because of its location -- right in the middle of all the commerce and activity in this busy suburban area. ?
