About the Cemetery: Research reveals this cemetery has also been known over the years as the King Cemetery, and in county records as no name cemetery. Rev. Charles Boles was appointed Missionary by the Methodist Church to the Shawnee Indians from 1852- 1857. Rev Boles settled here, claimed 160 acres in 1860, including this ¸ acre. He continued to preach in Kansas for 55 years. The first known burial was Elizabeth Boles, believed to be his wife in 1863. The property changed hands several times. In 1883, David Johnson a merchant in Wilder, bought the property. A 1928 deed to Herman Gilbert specifically identified this ¸ acre as a burial ground. There are 13 documented graves, the last burial in 1939. There may be other graves as original stones have disappeared over the years. Charles King, and employee of Rev. Boles and father of Harry King, Johnson Co. Commissioner in the 1950s, is buried here, along with other King family members. Property of Monticello District Cemetery Association, erected 2004.
