Joseph Lutz
DR. JOSEPH LUTZ for more than twenty years has supplied the services of a capable and thorough dental surgeon to the community of Smith Center and Smith County. He is an old resident of Kansas and his family has been identified with the northern section of the state for forty years.
He was born at Ottumwa, Iowa, August 6, 1872. His parents, Roman and Mary (Hungerford) Lutz, lived for many years at Beloit, Kansas. Roman Lutz was born in Baden, Germany, in 1832, and came to America when a young man, became an American citizen, and was a contractor in Pennsylvania, Ottumwa, Iowa, and afterwards in Beloit, Kansas, where he located in 1879. He died at Beloit in 1915. He was a democrat in politics and a Catholic in religion. His wife was born in 1834 and died at Beloit in 1880. They were the parents of ten children, two of whom are dead. Those living are: Will T. Lutz, in the wholesale produce business at Beloit; Fred, a Beloit merchant; Frank, an attorney at Beloit; E. Theodore, a physician and surgeon at Red Lodge, Montana; I. L., in the wholesale produce business at Mankato, Kansas; Clara, widow of Dr. E. M. Daily, of Beloit; Dr. Joseph, of Smith Center; and Mary, who resides at Beloit, the wife of James Finnigan, a merchant.
Doctor Lutz was educated in the public schools of Beloit, being seven years of age when his family located there. He attended high school, and in 1895 graduated D. D. S. from the Kansas City Dental College. The following year he practiced in Arizona, for one year was located at Mankato, Kansas, and in 1897 moved to Smith Center, where in the course of years he has built up a tremendous following as a dentist. He is a democratic voter. In 1901, at Smith Center, he married Miss Belle Reed, daughter of H. H. and Sarah (Welch) Reed. Her parents are both deceased. Mr. Reed was a well known attorney at Smith Center. Doctor and Mrs. Lutz have one child, Wilford Reed, born May 21, 1903.
