Dan Bogue Harrison

DAN BOGUE HARRISON, brother of Dwight H. and cashier of the Downs State Bank, was born at Chittenden, Vermont, January 29, 1865. He completed his early education in the public schools of Holley, New York, attended Williams Business College at Rochester, and soon after leaving school came west and located at Concordia, Kansas, in December, 1885. It was there he gained his thorough knowledge of banking, as assistant cashier of the Cloud County Bank. In 1892, associated with his father and brother, he established the State Bank of Downs, and has since been its cashier. He is also a director in the Rice, Johntz Lumber Company of Downs, is director and treasurer of the Downs Electric Light and Power Company, and a director of the Downs Artificial Ice and Storage Company.

His deep interest in the welfare of his locality and state has led Mr. Harrison into active participation in political affairs. In 1904 he was elected to the State Senate, serving through the sessions of 1905 and 1907. As a banker of established reputation he was appointed a member of the banking committee and insurance committee, and was identified with all the progressive legislation of those two sessions. He also served two terms as mayor of Downs, served several terms on the city council, and for the past twenty-six years has been city treasurer. He is a republican, a member of the various Masonic bodies, including Downs Lodge No. 204, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of which he is Past Master, Osborne Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Beloit Commandery of Knights Templars, Topeka Consistory No. 1 and Isis Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Salina. He is also affiliated with Concordia Lodge of Elks and Garfield Chapter of the Eastern Star of Downs and Downs Camp, Modern Woodmen of America. He is owner of considerable real estate in Downs, including his commodious home built in 1908.

Mr. Harrison married at Downs in 1894 Miss Artie T. Dillon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Asa Dillon of Downs. Her father is a retired railroad man. To their marriage were born three children, one daughter and two sons. Catherine, born in 1895, graduated with the A. B. degree from Washburn College in 1918, and is now an assistant in the bank. William Henry, born in 1897, left the Kansas University to enter the army, served in the radio-wireless telegraphy department of the United States navy, and when the war closed was stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. Dan Bogue, Jr., born in June, 1899, was an honor graduate of the Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington, Missouri, in the class of 1918, and after three months in the officers training camp at Fort Sheridan was commissioned a second lieutenant and was soon transferred as an instructor in the Students Army Training Corps at Columbus University at Columbus, Ohio, and at the close of 1918 was on duty at Ashland, Ohio.
