Edwin Haas

EDWIN HAAS, M. D. A physician and surgeon of Claflin who has made more than a local name and reputation, Doctor Haas graduated in medicine nearly twenty years ago and has been busy with his professional work ever since.

He was born in Spencer County, Indiana, February 3, 1874, and came to Kansas when ten years of age. His father, Adam Haas, located in Rice County, on a farm near Chase, and the rest of his life was spent as a farmer, making his home at different times at Sterling, Hutchinson and in Rice County. Dr. Edwin Haas is a brother of Dr. A. R. Haas, a well known physician of Ellinwood.

In addition to the advantages received in the local schools of Kansas Edwin Haas attended Iowa Wesleyan University, where he spent two years in the literary course. When about twenty years old he returned to the farm, and three years later determined to make medicine his vocation. He then entered the University Medical College of Kansas City, where he was graduated M. D. March 22, 1900. He at once located at Claflin and from that point has carried his professional service over a wide region, covering portions of Rice, Ellsworth and Russell counties. He is a deep student, and has taken a post-graduate course at Cincinnati.

In Marion County, Kansas, July 2, 1910, Doctor Haas married Miss Margaret O'Neill. She was born in Marion County, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry O'Neill, pioneers of that region. Her father and mother both bore the family name of O'Neill though they were not related. They were natives of Ireland and her father became widely known in Marion County as a successful stockman. He was still living in that county when he died in Kansas City in 1916. Doctor Haas's mother is still living. Mrs. Haas is one of a family of six daughters and one son, and she was born March 11, 1888, and is a high school graduate. She and Doctor Haas have two children, Mildred, born in 1912, and Eleanor, born in 1916.
