Harriet Marie (Hoss) Brickey

Harriet Marie Brickey, 96, of Abilene, Kansas, died Saturday in the Alterra Sterling House in Abilene, Kansas. She was born January 11, 1911 in Potwin, Kansas, the daughter of the late Hulbert E. and Esther (Long) Hoss.

She taught school in Sun City, Kinsley, Pratt, Dodge City and Hutchinson. She was a 1928 graduate of Sun City High School. She received a BS in Elementary Education and a Masters in Education from Fort Hays University and a Masters in Speech Pathology from Wichita State University. Her memberships include Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW and Order of the Eastern Star.

She was in Abilene 12 years prior to coming from Wichita.

On June 2, 1940 she married Curtis Brickey in Sun City, Kansas. He preceded her in death January 1978.

She is survived by one daughter Karyl and husband Bob Ford of Abilene, Kansas; sister, Ellinor Bible of Wichita, Kansas; one brother, Harold Hoss of Sun City, Kansas; grandsons, Eric Schmutz of Alexandria, Virginia and Todd Schmutz of Denver, Colorado; granddaughter, Stephanie Simpson of Austin, Texas and a great granddaughter, Eleanor Schmutz. She was preceded in death by a son James Brickey.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 7, at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, with Reverend Rob Schmutz presiding. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt. Memorial donations may be made to Children’s Shrine Hospital in care of the mortuary.
