OBITUARY: Mrs. J. H. Gentry

On October 28, 1860, in the home of Leonard and Mollie Crabb in Dearborn, Missouri, there was born a baby girl, whom they named Alice. Alice was born with the blood of pioneer parents in her veins and she was content when her parents brought her to Leavenworth, Kansas as a child. Here she grew to womanhood.

In 1877, she was united in marriage to Charles McGarvin, and one year later she came with her husband to a farm near Caldwell, Kansas. Her only child, James C. was born to this union.

In 1884 she came to Barber county and settled on a claim in the western part of the county. Here she experienced all the hardships and thrills of the pioneer, but she survived them all and loved to tell of those early days and happy that she had had some part in making Barber county one of the outstanding counties of the state.

She was married to J. H. Gentry in 1888. No children were born to this marriage. But she took great delight in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Gentry retired from the ranch and moved into Medicine Lodge ten years ago. Mr. Gentry passed away in September 1933. Mrs. Gentry was 78 years, 3 months and 13 days old when she died last Friday in her home in Medicine Lodge.

She was of cheerful and happy disposition and it carried her through these last years of extreme suffering, and tho confined to a wheel chair it was a rare delight to visit her and catch her sunny smile.

She was a member of the Methodist church and tho not able to attend the services for many years she always took an active part by her contributions and keeping up with its activities.

She leaves to mourn her going, one brother, John Crabb of Morton, Idaho, her son, James C. McGarvin of the home, two granddaughters, Mrs. Beulah Cline of Lake City, and Mrs. Velma Mills of Lathom, Kansas; four great grandchildren; one niece, Mrs. Mary Fulmer of Hennessy, Oklahoma, and her many friends.
