Obituaries

Gladys Steele Palmer, 82, of Osgood, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Waters of Ross Manor in Dillsboro. She was born at Osgood on June 26, 1925, the daughter of Clyde and Bertha Rose Webster. She was married to Albert Steele and he preceded her in death on July 11, 1987. She was married to Sylvanus Palmer in 1996 and he survives.

Other survivors include five sons, Ralph (Charlotte) Steele of Fairland, Leigh (Cheryl) Steele of Versailles, Glen (Brenda) Steele of Versailles, Norman Steele of Stanford, North Carolina and Terry Steele of Indianapolis; one daughter, Sandy (Paul) Clayton of Holton; one step-daughter, Betty Culp of Oregon City, Oregon; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one brother, Earl (Betty) Beach of Midway, Ohio; and one sister, Esther Delay of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter-in-law Jean, grandson Jeff Steele, and great grandson Rion Dale Steele. Mrs. Palmer was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ. She was a former employee of US Shoe in Osgood and retired in 1988 after 18 years as a dietician at the Muscatatuck State Developmental Center.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 12 at the Versailles Church of Christ with Dale Day officiating. Burial was in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison. Alberta Berry, 85, of Moores Hill, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2008, at Dearborn Co. Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Sibbett-Moore Funeral Home in Moores Hill.

Stephanie Marie Gould, 16, of New Alsace, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2008 in Hamilton County, Ohio. She was born on January 15, 1992 in Batesville, the daughter of Debbie Oswald Hoffmeier and Richard Gould.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Debbie and Scott Hoffmeier of New Alsace; brother, Michael Hoffmeier; father and step-mother, Richard and Cindy Gould of Sunman; sister, Maurissa Amhrein; grandparents, Bill and Shirley Oswald of Batesville, Lester and Laverene Hoffmeier of New Alsace, Curtis and Alice Hicks of Versailles, Richard Gould, Sr., of Sunman, and Ed and Joan Gindling of Sunman; and great grandmother Lavanna Fritsch of New Alsace.

Miss Gould was a sophomore at East Central High School in St. Leon, where she was a member of the soccer team and the Elite LGSC Roadrunners.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 14 from 4-8 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home in Sunman. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in New Alsace, with Rev. Brian Esarey, Pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Paul Cemetery. Memorials may be given to a memorial scholarship fund established at East Central High School. Cook Funeral Home in Sunman is in charge of arrangements.

Harry D. Minor, III, 65, of Versailles, formerly of North Vernon, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral Home in North Vernon with Rev. Dick Burcham officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of service on Saturday. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Jennings County. Arrangements were made in care of Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service.

Mary Elizabeth Karsteter, 95, of Lawrenceburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the Woodland Hill Nursing Center in Lawrenceburg. She was born at Rising Sun on April 27, 1913, the daughter of Henry Earl and Grace Hanna Williams. She was married to A. Creighton "Peck" Karsteter on November 14, 1931 and he preceded her in death on December 25, 2001.

Survivors include one son, A. Steven (Sue) Karsteter of Lawrenceburg; two daughters, Barbara Harrison of Lawrenceburg and Patricia (Rodney) Kinzer of The Villages, Florida; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her great grandson, Matthew Kinzer.

Mrs. Karsteter was a 1931 graduate of Rising Sun High School. She had attended Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Purdue University. She was a homemaker, loving mother, wonderful grandmother, an avid bridge player, and a member of the Bright Christian Church. She was also a 75-year member of Tri-Kappa and had been a 20-year volunteer for the Dearborn County Welfare Department.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 26 at 2 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Mark Fugate officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemtery at Aurora. Memorials may be given to the Lawrenceburg Public Library, Tri-Kappa Memorial Fund, or P.A.W.S. in care of the funeral home.

Leon Cole, 67, of Versailles, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at his home. He was born at Osgood on January 28, 1941, the son of Lawrence and Ruth Hardebeck Cole.

Survivors include his mother Mrs. Ruth Cole of Holton; two sons, Dwayne (Marci) Cole of Hanover, Joe (Saradee) Cole of Versailles; two daughters, Michelle (Rodney) Sellers and Katrina (Jerry) Keck, both of Versailles; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Lanny (Carolyn) Cole of Canaan; two sisters, Ruth (Phillip) Meisberger of New Marion and Judy (Omer) Powers of Holton. He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Cole was a 1958 graduate of New Marion High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the 5th Engineering Batallion. Mr. Cole was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Sharpshooter Badge. He was a self-employed timber buyer and had worked for Tru-Temper in North Vernon. He was a member of the Milan American Legion.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 12 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial was in the Indiana Veterans Cemetery in Madison. Memorials may be given to the Milan American Legion in care of the funeral home.

Colin Ray Rodgers, 42, of Milan, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at his residence in Milan. He was born on December 28, 1965 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Ray H. and Karen (Finn) Rodgers. He married Billie (Lewis) Rodgers on February 10, 2006 and she survives. Other survivors include son, Colin Rodgers at home; daughters, Ashley, Samantha and Madison Rodgers, all at home; step-children, Brittany and Stevie Ray Beihn, both at home; two grandchildren; father, Ray Rodgers of Milan; brother, Dallas Rodgers Milan; and sister, Lisa Webb of Milan.

Mr. Rodgers was a construction worker for R&R Drywall.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 12, at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan, with Father Frank Eckstein officiating. Burial was in the Hogan Hill Cemetery near Moores Hill. Memorials may be given to the family. Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan was in charge of arrangements.

James Herring of Milan, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Waters of Batesville. Arrangements are pending at Sibbett-Moore Funeral Home in Moores Hill.

Christopher J. Hughes, 23, of Versailles, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at his home. Arrangements were conducted through the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
