Mrs. Rachel Piatt [sic], the oldest lady in Bartholomew county, died at 4 o’clock last Monday at the Piatt [sic] residence, four miles southwest of this city, aged 97 years this coming March.
Mrs. Piatt was the mother of eight children, two of whom are still alive. She has twenty-two grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
The funeral occurred from the Piatt [sic] residence Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. M. A. Farr. Interment at Mount Pleasant cemetery.

She was white, widowed and a housewife. Her father’s name was John McWilliams (born in England) and her mother’s maiden name Margaret Fischer (born in Germany). She was buried in Mt. Pleasant [Garden City, Bartholomew County, Indiana] on 16 Jan 1900, undertaker Davidson & Henderson.
The 1860 US Federal Census for Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana records fifty-three-year-old, Virginia-born farmer Benjamin Piatt, his fifty-five-year-old, Virginia-born wife Rachel Piatt, and their children, twenty-year-old, Ohio-born Charles, seventeen-year-old, Indiana-born Sarah, nine-year-old, Indiana-born David and 8-year-old, Indiana-born Eliza J Piatt [sic].
The Bartholomew County Indiana WPA Marriage Index, 1850–1920, referencing Book C-6, page 470, records that Felix G. Shields married Sarah J. Piatt [sic] on 4 Oct 1860.
The 1870 US Federal Census for Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana records twenty-nine-year-old, Indiana-born farmer Felix G. Shields, his twenty-eight-year-old, Indiana-born wife Sarah J. Shields and their Indiana-born children, eight-year-old Willard, seven-year-old Rachel E., five-year-old Sophia I., four-year-old Mary A. [sic Mayme], three-year-old Medora and three-month-old Josie A. Shields.
The 1900 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana records twenty-five-year-old, Indiana-born lawyer L. Ert Slack and his twenty-six-year-old [sic], Indiana-born wife Mamie [sic] Slack.
Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899–2011, Registered No. 16050, records that Mayme Slack died of coronary thrombosis on 20 May 1939 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, aged 73 years, 4 months and 0 day. She was born 20 Jan 1866. She was white, married and “at home”. Her husband’s name was L. Ert Slack, her father’s name was Felix G. Shields, and her mother’s maiden name Sarah Piatt [sic]. She was buried in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana on 23 May 1939, undertaker Ragsdale & Price.
