Vernon D. Maddux

Vernon D. Maddux, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Fort Wayne. He was a resident of Fort Wayne and a former resident of Camby.

He was born June 17, 1921, in Snowflake, Va. His parents were Allen D. and Nancy (Broadwaters) Maddux. He married Dorothy D. (Hawkins) Maddux. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Nancy E. Barkhaus and Cindy J. Day, both of Fort Wayne; four sisters, Ruth Campbell of Nashville, Tenn., Bess Wampler of Bristol, Va., Virginia Lane of Gate City, Va., and Kathleen Edwards of Henderson, Nev.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He retired from the Indiana National Guard in January 1978 as commander sergeant major.

He was a member of Fairfield Friends Meeting in Camby, Decatur Lions Club and West Newton Masonic Lodge 707.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from Oct. 22, 1940, to Sept. 20, 1945. He served in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star.

The Rev. Philip Gulley will conduct a service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield. Burial will be at Fairfield Friends Cemetery in Camby.
