William Cravens [sic], the venerable father of Trustee John B. Cravens [sic], of Hamblen township, is very ill. While walking around near his dwelling he suffered a stroke of paralysis and fell to the ground. The entire right side of his body is paralyzed and at this writing his recovery seems doubtful. He is seventy-four years of age.—Brown County Dem.

William Craven, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Hamblen Township, was stricken with paralysis January 18; died January 29, his age being 74 years, 8 months, 26 days. He was conscious during his illness until death. He had formerly served his people as Justice of the Peace for eight years and served as superintendent of roads and made a faithful officer. He lived a faithful Christian for forty years and told his family before death that he was going to take a journey and the way was clear and he was ready to go. The funeral took place at Nineveh on Wednesday, Rev. Spicer conducting the services.—Brown County Demo.

Note: Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899–2011 Brown County, Health Officer’s Record Number 3, page 285, records that William Craven, a white, married male, died on 29 Jan 1900 at about 5 p.m. at his residence in Hamblen Township from apoplexy of about 15 days duration with the immediate cause of death being gangrene of seven days duration. He was born in England to unknown parents. William was buried in Nineveh, Indiana on 31 Jan 1900, undertaker C. J. McIlvain.
