Many expressions of mingled surprise and regret were heard from the lips of citizens, Sunday, when it was announced that Charles Wilson, of the Merchants Hotel, had died. But few knew of his illness. He had been taken sick Thursday with what at first appeared to be a slight attack of pneumonia but which rapidly assumed a more serious form. On Saturday he had a congestive chill but rallied and it was hoped the worst had passed. But a second chill about one o’clock Sunday afternoon proved fatal.
Mr. Wilson came to Franklin from Edinburg several years ago and as proprietor of the Merchants Hotel had made himself popular not only with the traveling public but with citizens as well. He gave his entire attention to looking after the comfort of guests, was accommodating to an unusual degree and endangered his own health in the pains he took for the convenience and comfort of others. He was up late every night for the midnight train and again for the early train in the morning. Continual loss of sleep overtaxed his physical endurance and when the symptoms of pneumonia appeared, he became an easy prey to this dread disease. Under his proprietorship the hotel has built up a better patronage than ever before, and it will be a difficult matter to find another who can take his place with the same assurance of success. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Order of Red Men and his funeral, which occurred Tuesday, was conducted under their auspices. The remains were taken to Edinburg for burial, attended by the entire order.
