A PIONEER of Johnson County Passes Away in Clark Township
James Williams, one of the pioneers of Johnson county, passed away Tuesday afternoon at his home in Clark township, his death being the close of a long sickness. The funeral services were held Thursday morning at the residence; the body was interred in the family burying ground.
Mr. Williams was born in Tennessee in 1810 and came to Indiana with his father in 1816, locating in Wayne county. Five years later the family removed to this county settling upon land which is the present site of Edinburg. He worked for several years during early manhood for George Cutsinger, but when in 1835 he was married to Miss Judea Wheeler he entered a farm in Clark township and lived there until his death. They enjoyed over sixty years of wedded life, she having died July 4, 1896.
Mr. Williams was a hard working careful farmer and was for years one of the most prosperous farmers of the county, owning at one time about 500 acres. He was a leader in his township, and served at one time as trustee. In politics he was an ardent Republican, voting for every candidate of that party from Fremont to McKinley.
During the war he was thoroughly a union man and served as an enrolling officer. Mr. Williams was a member of the Christian church at Rocklane and lived up to his professions. He was honest in all of his dealings, was a clever gentleman and entitled to the respect and love he received from his neighbors. Of the fifteen children born to Mr. and Mrs. Williams five sons survive–J. H. of Indianapolis, J. T., R. T., F. P. and H. G. Williams of Clark township; the latter is the present trustee.
