Simon Welsh, whose death occurred Dec. 1, at his home in northeast Franklin, had long resided in this county and was held in great esteem by all who knew him. He was born in 1829 in the county of Kilkenny, Ireland, and came to America in 1853, first landing in New York. He at once went to Boston spending several years in and near that city. Afterwards he went to Wisconsin where he worked during the summer, and in winter went south working on levees being constructed by the government. In 1861 he located in Johnson County, where he continued to reside until his death.

In 1863 he was married to Miss Ann Farley, who is still living. Besides the wife he leaves four children, Lawrence, John, Kathleen and Mrs. Harry Comiskey, of Indianapolis; also one sister in Boston, Mass. and three brothers in Ireland. Three other brothers who came to America had previously died. One is buried in California, one in Nebraska and one in Massachusetts. The latter was a noted Catholic priest, who died at Natick, Mass. in March, 1890. Deceased was of a kindly disposition, a true friend and honorable citizen.
