In Memoriam.

Since it hath pleased God in His infinite wisdom and mercy to remove from our midst by death Asa Garrett Terhune, one of our kindred, who was bound to us in love by the strong ties of natural affection, one whose paternal and domestic relations were such that our judgment would have dictated that he remain until decrepitude would have rendered him less useful, or at least until his family would have been less dependent.

But alas, in the midst of life, the fey hand of death was laid upon his brow, and now we know him no more in the flesh. Only the picture of memory remains. But we mourn not as those who has no hope, knowing his faith in a God whose ways and whose thoughts are as high above our ways and our thoughts as the heavens are above the earth. We submit, we acquiesce, believing that “all things work together for good to them that love the Lord.”

Deceased was born Sept. 29, 1856, and died March 17, 1898. He was married to Miss Nannie J. Williams, of Boone County, Ind., May 21, 1869, to which union were born five children, viz: Ila Bert, Chalmers Victor, Walter Deloss, Elba Buren and Robert Max, who, with their mother remain to mourn their loss. He united with the Primitive Baptist church the first Sunday in April, 1889; was baptized the first Sunday in May, and arose to a newness of life in which he ever afterward walked.

He was a true and devoted husband, a kind and indulgent parent, an accommodating and obliging neighbor. Most of his life was spent in Johnson county, where he was born and where he died. The first and last year of his life was spent in Union township, while the intervening part in Hensley and Nineveh. He died on the fifty-sixty anniversary of the marriage of his father and mother and was laid to rest in the First Mt. Pleasant cemetery to await the resurrection morn, when we hope to renew our relations in a new life in the great beyond.
