William Henry Surface, son of Wm. and Elizabeth Surface, was born May 15, 1830 and departed this life May 13, 1912, after many weeks of intense suffering. In early life he was married to Susan Foglesong. To this union were born nine children, three sons and six daughters. The wife, two daughters and one son preceded him to the grave, while two sons, four daughters, one brother, one sister and many grandchildren are left to mourn their loss. Uncle Henry spent his entire life in Johnson county, where he was well known and where many of his friends and neighbors witnessed the sad event of his burial on his 82nd birthday anniversary.

The stars beam forth their silver rays,
To light our way at night;
The birds sing sweet their cheerful lays,
The flowers enchant our sight;
But ere we think the time is past,
Old age comes creeping on,
And death comes to us all at last,
Our life our labors done.

Note: The Johnson County WPA Death Index, 1882-1920, page 200, referencing Book H-22, page 49, records that Wm. Henry Surface was 81 years old when he died in White River Township, Johnson County, Indiana.
