Mrs. Mary Stuart, the venerable mother of G. C. Stuart of this city, died at 9 o’clock Saturday night at her home in Fairland, aged 78 years. She had been in poor health for several months and death did not come unexpectedly. She was born in the year 1814, in Wyth [sic] county, Va., and came to this state in 1833 with her parents, Joel and Elizabeth Pierce, who settled on a farm in Pleasant township. After her marriage she moved to Fairland where she resided until her death. During her widowhood she had lived with her youngest daughter, Miss Mary Stuart, who kindly cared for her in her last sickness. She was one of the pioneer mothers of Johnson county whose gracious deeds and good qualities will long be cherished by those who knew her. The funeral occurred, Monday afternoon at Fairland, conducted by Rev. John Q. Smith, pastor of the Christian church of Monrovia.
