Edinburg Youth
Killed in Crash
At Roads 31, 79

Michael
Streeval,
17, Victim

A 17-year-old Edinburg route 2 youth was fatally injured early today at Roads 31 and 79 when he and a woman with him were thrown from a car after collision with a semi-trailer truck.

Killed in the 1 a.m. mishap was Michael Dean Streeval, 17, Edinburg route 2. The deputy county coroner, Dr. Walter Able, ruled the death was due to a massive skull fracture.

Seriously injured was Mrs. Joan C. Brown, 21, Edinburg route 2, Driftside trailer park. It was believed she was driving the car.

She suffered a skull fracture and was taken to Robert Long hospital at Indianapolis in a private ambulance after treatment and X-rays at Bartholomew county hospital here.

The southbound car, turning left from Road 31 into Road 79 about 10 miles north of Columbus, rammed the trailer of the passing northbound truck. Its driver, Charles Henry Buchanan, 36, Louisville, was unhurt.

Indiana state police Trooper Larry Brown, who investigated the accident with the aid of the Bartholomew county sheriff”s department and the Edinburg police, said Streeval and Mrs. Brown suffered their injuries when thrown from the car.

They either struck their heads against the car doors or the truck trailer, he said.

Safety belts in the car were not in use. If they had been used, it is possible the injuries could have been minimized, Trooper Brown said.

The accident occurred when the car turned left from the south lane of Road 31 and drove into the trailer of the northbound truck.

Mr. Buchanan, driving the truck owned by the Hajek Trucking company, was en-

route to Angola.

Mr. Buchanan said as he approached the stop light at the intersection the signal was red, so he slowed.

A car was at the stoplight in the inside lane of traffic and he moved to the outside lane. The signal changed to green and he entered the intersection with the other car preceding him in the inside lane. Mrs. Brown’s car made the turn from the south lane. Mrs. Brown’s car made the turn from the south lane, apparently without seeing the truck.

Following the impact the car turned sideways to the trailer and then spun away in the opposite direction, heading north. It came to a stop on the median.

Mrs. Brown reportedly lives with a brother and was planning to return to Bicknell today where she had formerly resided. She recently worked for a Franklin garment factory, officials said.

According to the state police statistics, the Streeval youth’s death was the 12th this year in Bartholomew County. The number is one more than the total for all of 1966. The total includes one this year in the city.

The Brown car knocked over a white cross in the median, marking the death of Nellie E. Shephard, also of Edinburg route 2. She was killed in a 2-car collision at the intersection Aug. 29, 1965.

Funeral services for the Streeval youth will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Mutz funeral home by the Rev. Grover Myers. Burial will be at Rest Haven cemetery in Edinburg. Persons may call after 7 o’clock tonight.

Born in Columbus June 4, 1950, he was the son of Ulysses and Helen Streeval. He was a student at Edinburg high school and was a member of the Apostolic Tabernacle in Edinburg.

Surviving with his parents are six brothers and sisters, Allan Streeval of Edinburg and Gary, Timothy, Joseph, Rebecca, and Mary Kay Streeval, all at home.
