OBITUARY.

Mariah Owens was born in Clark County, Indiana, Aug. 11, 1823. In early life she came with her parents, James and Mary Owens, to this county and the greater part of her long life has been spent near the old homestead.

Many years ago she professed faith in Christ as a personal Savior and united with the 2nd Mt. Pleasant Baptist church, being baptized by Elder Benjamin Reece, who passed to his reward almost half a century ago. Her relation with this church has been almost continuous for nearly 50 years.

She was united in marriage with Gideon Stevens, September 20, 1838, and together they shared the trials and burdens of life for more than 60 years. beginning as we know in the early settling of this country, they had their share of hardships and privations, as well as their share of the honor due the pioneer fathers and mothers in opening the way for these spacious homes for this generation and giving to us our church privileges far superior to any they could have in early life.

Four sons and seven daughters were born to them. Three sons and one daughter preceded the mother to the home beyond. One son and six daughters are left with the aged father to mourn the loss of this dear one. There are 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren besides many other relatives and a host of friends who will sadly miss the gentle voice and pleasant greeting of her who has left us, but we mourn not without hope.

She was a typical Christian wife and mother and many Christian graces clustered about her long life. She departed this life Jan 9, 1900, age 76 years, 5 months and 28 days, being the last member of her father’s family who have been continuous residents of this county for more than three-quarters of a century.

A gentle, loving, unassuming, Christian mother has passed to her reward. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”

Funeral services were held at the home Jan 11 in charge of Rev. P.O. Duncan and Rev. Bouher. Three grandsons and 3 sons-in-law were pall bearers. E. G. Barnhizer, funeral director.
