EDINBURGH — Emerson Smith, 65, of 618 S. Pleasant in Edinburgh, died Friday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected.
Smith was taken to Johnson County Hospital at Franklin from his home by Lifeline ambulance and later was transferred to Methodist, where he was pronounced dead.
He was a former employee of Arvin Industries.
Funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Ray Brown at 1 p.m. Monday at Eskew Funeral Home at Edinburgh. Calling hours will begin after 4 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Franklin.
Smith was born April 18, 1918, in Bartholomew County, the son of Clarence and Odessa Amy Bolinger Smith. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of the Edinburgh American Legion. He retired from Bryant Furnace Co. at Indianapolis.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Purtlebaugh of Columbus; two brothers, Elmer A. Smith of Columbus and Ray Smith of Franklin, and two grandchildren.
