EDINBURGH — Eddie Lea Smajo, 77, a resident of Franklin United Methodist Community, died there at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2000.
Mrs. Smajo moved from Chicago to Nineveh in 1985. She retired from Hines (Ill.) Veterans Administration Hospital.
She was a member of Edinburgh United Methodist Church, Edinburgh American Legion, Nineveh Senior Citizens, Pi Omicron national sorority, Alexander Hamilton Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Dames of the Court of Honor, Johnson County Church Women United and Johnson County Council on Aging.
She served in the Navy Nurses Corps during World War II and was a charter member of Women in the Military.
Funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home with the Rev. Byron Fritz officiating. Calling will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Memorials may be made to Edinburgh American Legion or Edinburgh United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Mrs. Smajo was born in Berclair, Texas, Oct. 30, 1923, the daughter of Daniel and Della Hartmann Nelson. She married Daniel C. Smajo Feb. 12, 1966. He died June 8, 2000.
She is survived by a brother, Daniel H. Nelson of Milton, Fla.; a sister, Charlene F. Phillips of Spring, Texas; and a step-granddaughter, Melissa Smajo.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Anita Mae Taylor.

Eddie Lea Smajo, 77, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin. She was a resident of Nineveh and a former resident of Chicago.
She was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Berclair, Texas. Her parents were Daniel and Della (Hartmann) Nelson. She married Daniel C. Smajo on Feb. 12, 1966. He preceded her in death June 8, 2000. Survivors include a brother, Daniel H. Nelson of Milton, Fla.; a sister, Charlene F. Phillips of Spring, Texas; a step-granddaughter, Melissa Smajo; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anita Mae Taylor.
She was formerly employed by Hine’s VA Hospital in Hines, Ill., as a nurse. She was a member of Edin-burgh United Methodist Church, Edinburgh American Legion Post 233, Nineveh Senior Citizens, Alexander Hamilton Chapter DAR, Dames of the Court of Honor, Johnson County Church Women United and Johnson County Council on Aging. She was a lifetime member of Pi Omicron National Sorority and a charter member of Women in the Military.
She was a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II.
The Rev. Byron Fritz will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Edinburgh American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside rites at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh.

Eddie Lea Nelson Smajo, 77, Franklin, died June 13. She was a nurse at Hines (Ill.) Veterans Administration Hospital before retiring. She was a Navy Nurse Corps veteran of World War II. Mrs. Smajo was a member of Nineveh Senior Citizens, Pi Omicron sorority and Dames of the Court of Honor.

She was the widow of Daniel C. Smajo.
Survivors: brother Daniel H. Nelson; sister Charlene F. Phillips; step-granddaughter Melissa Smajo.
