Dies at Son’s

John Shearer, 75, Native of
Germany, Succumbs

    John Shearer, age 75, retired
farmer of VanBuren township, died
Friday at 10:20 p. m. at the home
of a son, Charles Shearer, in Moral
township after a serious illness of
ten days of a complication of dis-
eases.
    Mr. Shearer was born in Germany
on May 18, 1870, the son of Peter
and Ann Shearer. The family em-
barked for this country when he
was nine weeks old and his mother
died and was buried at sea during
the trip.
    Mr. Shearer was a charter mem-
ber of the local Red Mens lodge. On
September 1, 1895, he was married
to Maggie Lee, whose death oc-
curred on November 20, 1900. Two
daughters were born to this union,
Maudie, who preceded him in death,
and Mrs. Nora Patterson, of Lewis
Creek, who survives.
    On August 4, 1901, he was mar-
ried to Easter Jane Spurlin and
she died on July 13, 1933. Five chil-
dren survive from this marriage.
They are Mrs. Eva Greshan, of this
city; Charles, at whose home he
died: Mrs. Lucy Cummins, of Fair-
land; Everett Shearer, of Green-
field, and Mrs. Edith Winkler, of
Arlington. Also surviving are a
half-brother, Claude White, of Co-
lumbus;  seven grandchildren;  two
great-grandchildren and several
nieces and  nephews.
    Funeral services will be held Mon-
day at 2:30 p. m. at the Flat Rock
Methodist Church with Rev. S. J.
Cross and Rev. John Thompson
officiating. Burial will be made in
the Flat Rock cemetery in charge
of C. F. Fix and Son. Friends may
call at the Fix mortuary at any
time.
