John W. Ryker, age 58 years, a well-known and respected citizen of Frank­lin, died Friday morning at 11 o’clock at his home in west Franklin. He was an old soldier and a member of Wads­worth Post G.A.R. For a long time he had been in failing health, which ter­minated in lung trouble. Funeral ser­vices were held Sunday afternoon, from the residence conducted by Rev. L. P. Marshall, assisted by Dr. W. T. Stott. The pall bearers were members of Co. I, 18th Ind., to which deceased belong­ed. They were Edward Ditmars, D. D. Waldron, Henry Goodman, Henry Bo­gart, John Tilson and L. W. Knobe. Burial at Hopewell.

Note: Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899–2011, Health Officer’s Record Number 2, page 201, records that John William Ryker died from consumption of two years duration, at 11:00 a. m. on 22 Dec 1899 in Franklin, Franklin Township, Johnson County, Indiana, aged fifty-nine years, seven months and six days. He was a widower and a retired farmer, born in Jefferson County, Indiana. His father’s name was Abram Ryker, birthplace unknown. He was buried in Hopewell Cemetery on 24 Dec 1899, undertaker Covert & Covert.
