OBITUARY.
Samuel D. Riggs was born in Livingston Co, N.Y., Dec. 2nd, 1818, and moved with his parents to Decatur Co., living there until 1834. He then, with his parents moved to Johnson Co., where he was married April 11th, 1847, to Miss Grace Greenwood. To this union were born eight children, six of whom with their mother preceded their father to their eternal rest. In 1872, he was married to Miss Ester Baughman. To this union were born eight children, two sons, and six daughters, two of whom have gone to experience the realities of the unknown world. He was taken ill Oct. 11 and died on the 22 from pneumonia. He became conscious of approaching death just the day before his death and bade those in the room with him a very tender farewell and gently admonished the younger children to obey their mother. The funeral services which were held at the house, were conducted by W. N. Nowles, of Renselaer to a large crowd of sympathizing friends and neighbors, bearing testimony to the great esteem in which he was held. His remains were then laid to rest in the cemetery where his former wife and eight children are quietly resting.
The following acrostic is dedicated to his memory:
Sweet be thy sleep and calm thy rest
Among the saints forever blessed,
Many are the cares you left behind,
Unto death you were resigned,
Even bidding farewell to those behind.
Loved by friends and kindred here below
Doing to others as they should to you
Resigned to God’s will at last
In all of the follies of the past
God’s grace is sufficient for every ill
God’s love your soul shall fill—
Sleep, my brother, away from death’s cold chill.
S. T. Riggs.
