DEATH’S HARVEST
––––––––
VIRGIL RAGSDALE.
––––––––
The community was shocked Wednesday morning to learn of the sudden death of Virgil Ragsdale at his home near Hopewell. While he had not been well since Saturday night, yet not even the family or physician regarded his condition serious. He was in town Saturday and in his usual health. On returning home that night he was taken ill with intestinal trouble which caused severe pains. Dr. Jacob Dresslar was called and prescribed. The last visit of the physician was on Tuesday night about ten o’clock, and when he left the patient was considered in a no ways dangerous condition. At midnight his father-in-law, Abram Voris, arose and gave his medicine as directed, helped him into a comfortable position and again retired. Once after this he was awakened by hearing Mr. Ragsdale groan slightly but there being on further indications of pain he again went to sleep. At 3:15 he again went to the bedside to give the patient medicine as directed and found that Mr. Ragsdale was dead. He had not moved from the position in which he had been left, and had passed away apparently without pain. His body was cold at this time.
The shock to the family was indescribable. Mr. Ragsdale was a perfect specimen of physical strength and of vigorous health, and the serious nature of his illness had not been foreshadowed.
Deceased was a most excellent young man. He was the son of J. R. Ragsdale of Union township, and in October, 1895 had been married to Miss Vassie Voris. The wife and one little child, a daughter, survive, they, with other members of the family, have the deepest sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the residence, conducted by Rev. P. O. Duncan. Burial at Hopewell.
