H. Owen [sic] a colored man was struck by the south bound freight about noon Friday, at Edinburg and so badly injured that he died Saturday night. The train was running at a high rate of speed and it is said that the road will have to defend a suit for damages for the killing. Coroner Whitesides was down and held a investigation on the remains.

CORONER’S VERDICT

STATE OF INDIANA, Johnson County, |
}ss |
The undersigned coroner of Johnson county, Indiana, did on the 11th day of September 1891 hold an inquest on the body of Henry Owens, of Edinburg, Johnson county, Indiana, and having viewed the body and heard the testimony of witnesses, find that the deceased came to his death by reason of fracture of the frontal and parietal bones and a rupture of the branches of meningeal artery. Said fracture was caused by being struck by engine number six hundred and forty-two of the Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis railroad company on Friday, September 4, 1891. I further find from the evidence that said railroad company was not responsible for said accident.
The deceased was twenty-eight years old, six feet high, weight one hundred and forty pounds and complexion colored. No valuables were found on the body.
L. L. WHITESIDES,
Coroner J. C.
Franklin Ind., Sept. 11, 1891.
