Livy Overstreet Found Dead in His Berth.
––––––––
A dispatch received Monday evening in Franklin announced the death of Livy Overstreet. The news came as a great shock to his parents, G. M. Overstreet and wife, and to his many friends in Franklin. The following dispatch from Chicago which appeared in the papers Tuesday morning gives the details of his death so far as can be known:
“Hon. S. L. Overstreet, of Guthrie, O. T., was found dead today in a Chicago & Alton sleeper when the train reached Joliet. The body was brought to Chicago. Mr. Overstreet, according to the Pullman conductor on the train, complained considerably last night of pains in his stomach and retired early, to his berth. About 8:30 this morning, shortly before the train arrived at Joliet, the porter went to Mr. Overstreet’s berth to arouse him and found him dead. On the arrival of the train at the Dearborn-street station in this city, the body was placed in charge of an undertaker and will be held until instructions are received from Guthrie in regard to its disposition. Mr. Overstreet was traveling alone.”
Mr. Overstreet was enroute home to be present at the golden wedding celebration of his parents, which was to be observed next Monday. This fact renders his death especially sad and casts a gloom upon the family reunion that had been looked forward to with anticipation of the pleasure and enjoyment which such reunions afford.
The remains arrived in Franklin Tuesday evening on the 4:35 train.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence, conducted by Rev. L. P. Marshall.
Deceased was born July 24, 1853. His death is the first to occur in the family. He studied law in his father’s office and was admitted to the bar. For several years he practiced law in Franklin. He served as city attorney from 1880 to 1881.
In 1889 he went to Guthrie Oklahoma, where he had since resided. At the time of his death he was serving as United States District Attorney for Oklahoma.
A meeting of the Johnson county bar was held Tuesday afternoon in the Clerk’s office, committees appointed and appropriate resolutions in honor of the deceased passed and ordered of record.
