Death of R. T. Overstreet.

Richard T. Overstreet died Saturday morning at eleven o’clock at his residence on East Jefferson Street. Mr. Overstreet had been in feeble health for a number of years and during the two weeks preceding his death, his health had declined so rapidly that it was known by his friends that the end was not far off.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. L. P. Marshall.

Deceased was born in Oldham County, Ky., in 1825. He came to Johnson county in 1834 with his father who settled on the farm now owned by the heirs of the late J. T. Yager. At the age of twenty he began clerking for Herriott & Overstreet, the latter member of the firm, Wm. H. Overstreet, being his brother. Five years later he became a partner with his brother and continued in the merchandise business until 1858 when he retired, to become the cashier in the Farmers bank, organized at that time and continued in this position until 1863 when it was consolidated with the Second National Bank. During the existence of this bank he also served as cashier, and after the organization of the present Franklin National bank served for a number of years in the same capacity. He served one year as president of the bank when failing health compelled him to abandon active business duties.

Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church, and during his life had held many responsible positions in the church.

He was married three times. His first wife was Elizabeth Kempton, his second, Angie Dunlap, and surviving wife, Catherine Vannuys.

Will S. Overstreet, of Indianapolis, is a son by the first marriage, Joe Overstreet, of this city, by his second, and the remaining children, Merritt, Adair, Byron, Leslie, Lizzie, Grace and Clara, by his last marriage.

Deceased was an honorable citizen in every walk in life, and a man greatly esteemed in the community.
