Death of Adam Mutz.
Adam Mutz, one of the most prominent citizens of Edinburg, after an illness extending over two years, died Friday afternoon at one o’clock. He was a member of the drug firm of Mutz & Lynch and had a long, useful and honorable business career. In every respect a gentleman, he won the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the residence, conducted by Rev. S. W. Brown, of the Christian church, assisted by Rev. Charles D. Wilson.
The following sketch of his life is taken from the history of Johnson county:
Adam Mutz was born in Lancaster County, Penn., Dec. 22, 1829. Mr. Mutz’s father was a German and served in the German army before coming to the United States and served in several campaigns against the great Napoleon.
Adam Mutz was reared in Montgomery County, Ohio, and obtained the rudiments of a practical education in such schools as the country at that time afforded. At the age of nineteen he came to this county, and after following various occupations for a number of years, started a drug store in 1860 with Martin Lynch, which firm still exists, the oldest business established in the city of Edinburg. In his business relations Mr. Mutz had a reputation more than local, and as a public spirited citizen was fully alive to all the interests of the town in which he had so long resided, few occupied a more conspicuous and honored place. By diligent attention to the demands of the trade he had succeeded in establishing a successful business, and for years the firm name of Mutz & Lynch has been a synonym of honesty and fair dealing.
Mr. Mutz was a democrat in politics. He was one of the charter members of Herndon lodge, No. 95, I. O. O. F. which was organized in Edinburg in March, 1850, and was treasurer of this for a number of years. He was married April 12th, 1866, to Miss Martha Jarrell. Five children were born to this union, John R., Lucy, Kate, Edell and Howard H.
