MRS. SUSAN MITCHELL

––––––

Aged Amity Woman Died Fri-
day—Was Lifelong Resident
of Johnson County

AMITY, May 2—Private funeral services will be held from the residence in Amity Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, for Mrs. Susan A. Mitchell, age 96, widow of William A. Mitchell and a lifelong resident of this community, whose death occurred Friday afternoon. The services will be in charge of the Rev. A. W. McDaniel of Franklin, with burial in the Hamner cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the residence at any hour preceding the funeral.

Mrs. Mitchell had been in failing health for the past year suffering from rheumatism and although she had rarely left the house, had remained active in the home and had retained her interest in her friends and family and events of the day. She had been ill for the past six weeks but had only been confined to her bed for the past few days. Death was due to arterio sclerosis and other complications of advanced age.

She was born in a farm near the Tennessee church, south of Franklin on the Mauxferry road on April 23, 1835 and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gratner, who came to Indiana from Tennessee. She was united in marriage to William A. Mitchell and during the succeeding years of her life had resided in this community coming to Amity about 24 years ago. Mr. Mitchell’s death occurred seven years ago.

Mrs. Mitchell was the mother of nine children, six of whom survive. They are John Mitchell, James Mitchell, Charles Mitchell, Mrs. Hattie Nash, Mrs. Etta D. Batton and Mrs. Dollie McKinney, with whom the mother had spent the past 23 years. All the children with the exception of Mrs. Batton, who lives in Indianapolis, are residents of Johnson county.

During her long residence in this community, Mrs. Mitchell had been a regular attendant at church services as long as her health had permitted. She was a member of the Tennessee Christian Church since early in life and was one of the oldest living members of that congregation.
