Ethel Alice Mitchell, daughter of T. S. and Mary C. Mitchell, was born in Franklin, Indiana, March 30, 1874, and died at the home of her mother on North Water Street Saturday, March 12, at 5:15 a.m. in the 18th year of her age. In 1879 she was called upon to mourn the loss of a father. Since that time she has been the comfort and help of a widowed mother who has for many years been an invalid. She was a very affectionate and dutiful child, untiring in her attentions to her mother’s wants, self-denying and self-sacrificing. The burdens of household cares early matured her in womanly virtues and ways that are admired by all. She lived a Christian life from earliest childhood. She united with the Franklin Baptist church when but ten years of age, under the pastorate of Rev. Scott. She was baptized by Rev. Norman Carr. While living at Salem, Indiana, she took her letter to the church in that place. Only a few days ago she applied for her letter to again unite with the First Baptist Church of this city, and she secured this letter during her brief illness the past week. She was a student of the high school and was very ambitious to gain a good record in her examination. This led her to bear up against sickness, she felt coming upon her. She came home from school quite ill on Friday one week before her death but thought of nothing serious. She bore her sickness with very little complaining and her friends did not realize her condition until Wednesday. She was confined to her bed but three days. She had warm friends wherever known and her many good qualities were highly commended by all. She closed her eyes in the sleep of death a devoted Christian, feeling assured that she was a child accepted of God. The funeral took place from her late home Sunday afternoon at 3:30 conducted by Prof. Hall of Franklin College assisted by Prof. Williams Superintendent of the public schools. A select quartette rendered appropriate hymns. The burial occurred at Greenlawn cemetery.
