Charles Metzgar [sic], age fourteen years, son of Timothy Metzgar [sic], janitor of the central school building, died Monday morning after a brief illness of typhoid fever. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock from the A.M.E. church, Rev. B. J. Coleman conducting the services.

Notes: The 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, records forty-two-year-old, Canada-born white janitor Timothy Metzger, his 40-year-old, Kentucky-born black wife Mary B. Metzger and their Indiana-born children (all listed as black), fifteen-year-old Florence, thirteen-year-old Charles, ten-year-old Marie and eight-year-old Timothy.
Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899–2011, Franklin, Franklin Township, Johnson County, Certificate and Record of Death, page 1190 records that Charles Frederick Metzker [sic] died at about 11 o’clock p. m. on 21 Oct 1900 in Franklin, Indiana from typhoid fever, aged thirteen years, seven months and twenty-one days. He was male, black and single, born in Franklin, Indiana. His father’s name was John Metzker [sic], born in Canada and his mother’s maiden name Belle Claggett, both in Kentucky. The informant was the doctor, Clarence Pr [illegible]. Charles was buried in Greenlawn on 23 Oct 1900, E. G. Barnhizer, undertaker.
