MRS. CHARLOTTE McCORD.
Mrs. Charlotte McCord was born in Bedford County, Pa., Nov. 24, 1803, died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Rod Whittaker, near Greenwood, Ind., May 23rd, 1890.
She possessed the full use of her mental faculties to the last. Without pain or suffering she fell asleep. She was married to Mr. Michael McCord at the age of twenty-four and for many years they shared each other’s sorrows and joys. She was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to him, and when he died she toiled harder than ever to provide for her children that were left in her care.
In 1854 her husband died leaving her with seven children, four of whom are living, one son and three daughters. Of this family there have been twenty-three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, most of whom are living and will now miss her from home and fireside. Truly, there will be to them that weep one vacant chair. She united with the Methodist church over forty years ago and was a faithful, loyal and devoted member. She was a constant reader of the Bible and church papers for years. She had been too feeble for a few years to attend church but has remained faithful to every trust. In all the relations of life, whether wife’s, mother’s, or child of God, this woman shrank from no duty but nobly and bravely tried to meet the obligations of life. Her last sickness was the result of a cold and was of short duration. She called all her children and friends to her bedside before she died and said that she was perfectly resigned to the will of Providence, and was ready to depart this life and expected to gain a home in heaven, where she hoped to meet us all. I will say at the last that so long as we live there shall always be a warm spot in our hearts consecrated to her honored and loved memory. We trust her peaceful soul has put on wings of immortality and winged its happy flight to that bright and beautiful home where there is no more sorrow, sickness and death, but a life of eternal happiness and joy. May the angels with outstretched arms and smiles of joyous meeting, give her welcome at the ‘beautiful gates ajar.’ On Sunday, the 25th, we followed the dearly loved remains of our mother and grandmother to her last resting place in the beautiful cemetery at Greenwood.
Beautiful spirit, free from pain
Ours the heart-ache, sorrow and pain,
Thine is the glory and infinite gain
Thy slumber is sweet.
