Death came suddenly to John A McCaslin age 81, in the Robert W. Long Hospital at Indianapolis, about 1 o’clock Monday afternoon after he had suffered a heart attack.
He had been in failing health for several years and, when his condition began to get serious, he was admitted to the hospital June 26. It was reported by hospital attaches that his condition was fair until ten minutes before his death. His death came exactly 30 months after that of his brother, Edgar McCaslin.
Funeral services are to be conducted in the Flinn and Maguire funeral home at 2:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Jack Masters, pastor of the Hopewell Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hopewell cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the mortuary Tuesday evening and Wednesday until time for the services and to attend the rites
Born at Hopewell
Mr. McCaslin was born John Arthur at the McCaslin homestead in the Hopewell community, Nov. 11, 1870 and was one of nine children of John and Martha Jane Alexander McCaslin.
He received his education in the Hopewell schools and the old Hopewell Academy. Later graduating from the high school there, Mr. McCaslin attended Franklin College.
Engaged in farming until 1938 when he retired, he had lived on part of the original McCaslin farm most of his life. After his retirement, he became custodian of the Hopewell school a few years and had made many friends among the young people of the township.
Mr. McCaslin had organized a class of young men in the church about 1910 and it was given the name The John a. McCaslin Bible Class. It is still active in church work. Mr. McCaslin had a great influence on the lives of these men and as long as he lived held their high respect.
Offered Lyceum Course
Under the sponsorship of the class, a lyceum course was brought to Hopewell and many noted lecturers, among them William Howard Taft. Other speakers, as well as entertainers, were enjoyed by the community.
Due to failing health, Mr. McCaslin was forced to retire from teaching the class several years ago.
In his youth he united with the Hopewell church and was elected as an elder in 1916 and had served in this office the remainder of his life.
Mr McCaslin was married to Lel-

la Covert at the Covert home in Hopewell on Nove. 11, 1897 and began housekeeping on the McCaslin farm. Mrs. McCaslin died March 8, 1943.
Interested in history, he was a member of the Indiana Historical Society and probably knew the history of the Hopewell church and community better than any other person.
His only survivors are a nephew, Cecil A. McCaslin, of Trafalgar; and three nieces, Mrs. Hugh Hamilton, Mrs. Paul A, Sievertson and Miss Elizabeth McCaslin, all of Hopewell.
