Death of Hugh Mathes.
The funeral of Hugh Q. Mathes occurred at the home of his parents, J. Q. Mathes, last Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. C. R. Hudson. The following obituary notice was prepared and read by the pastor:
Hugh Q. Mathes, who departed this life last Thursday morning at 15 minutes before seven o’clock was born on the 24th day of January, 1882, and was 17 years, 9 months and 15 days old at the time of his death. He grew from childhood to youth and from youth to young manhood in Franklin and vicinity and has a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in this community. He made “the good confession” some four years ago during the evangelistic efforts of Bro. J. V. Coombs and has ever since held membership in the Christian church of this city.
He was the youngest of three children and the esteem in which he was held was made manifest by the sacrifices which father and mother, brother and sister were willing to make for his comfort. It was my privilege to spend something over a year in this home and during that time nothing was counted too costly for him or no sacrifice too great to be made for his happiness. He was kind to his father and mother, thoughtful for his sister, considerate of his brother and companionable with his friends.
During the last few months his health had been in decline, which made him nervous and restless, so that when disease took hold upon him he had not the strength to battle with it, and after two weeks of suffering he passed quietly away to be at rest.
