Edgar McCaslin Dies Saturday at Memorial Hospital

Edgar McCaslin, age 75, died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday [7 Jan 1950] in Memorial Hospital where he was taken Friday morning about 11 o'clock following a heart attack about 9 o'clock at his home in the Hopewell community.

Funeral services will be held Monday [9 Jan 1950] at 2 p.m. at the Flinn funeral home with burial following in Greenlawn cemetery. The Rev. T. B, James of the Hopewell Presbyterian church will conduct the services.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. They are invited to attend the rites.

William Edgar McCaslin was born July 8,1874 in the Hopewell community, the son of John and Martha Jane Alexander. He spent his entire life on the farm where he was born. He was the youngest of nine children. The farm was purchased by Mr. McCaslin's father almost 100 years ago. When the original burned 23 years ago, the present residence was built.

Celebrated Golden Wedding

On Oct 25, 1899 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Halstead in Edinburg. Mr. and Mrs. McCaslin celebrated their golden wedding last October.

Surviving with the widow are two daughters, Miss Elizabeth (Betty) McCaslin and Mrs. Paul A. Sievertson, all of Hopewell; a brother, John A McCaslin of Franklin and five grandchildren, Leona Mae, Paul, Jon, David and Ellanor Louise Sievertson.

Mr. McCaslin was a leading farmer of Johnson county. When he was active in farming he bred Duroc hogs and raised prize winning Irish potatoes. A lover of horses he alway had the best on his farm.

Since boyhood Mr. McCaslin was a member of the Hopewell Presbyterian church. He took an active part in the church and in the community affairs until failing health prevented it. He was educated in the old Hopewell Academy. He was a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau.

Edgar McCaslin Rites Conducted

Many relatives and friends attended the last rites for Edgar McCaslin, prominent resident of the Hopewell community, in the Flinn funeral home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

The Rev. Theodore B. James, pastor of the Hopewell Presbyterian church of which Mr. McCaslin had been a member since boyhood, conducted the service.

The casket was carried by Kennith Blackwell, Cort Ditmars, Paul Kinnear, Howard Terrill, Roscoe Poe and Verne Merrick.

Mr. McCaslin died Saturday morning [7 Jan 1950] at 4:10 o'clock in Johnson county Memorial hospital. Friday morning about 9 o'clock he suffered a severe heart attack and was removed to the hospital at 11 a.m.

He retired from active farming about 15 years ago, but had continued to live on the farm where he was born 75 years ago.

Admired and held in high esteem by those who knew him, Mr. McCaslin’s home had always been open as a home to any member of his or Mrs. McCaslin's family, as long as his health permitted.

On Oct 25, Mr. and Mrs. McCaslin observed their golden wedding anniversary.

Those who survive are the widow, two daughters, five grandchildren and one brother.
